Turn by Turn Report – The Dunland Trap

Welcome to another turn by turn report! Today I am playing The Dunland Trap. As usual I am playing two handed and with the following decks: http://ringsdb.com/fellowship/view/1251

I have made some minor changes to the decks as of late but have not made these changes on Ringsdb as I would need to publish a new version of the fellowship which I will hold off on doing until some major changes are made. Essentially all that was changed is x1 Erestor, x1 Heir of Mardil and x1 Dunedain Warning were removed from The Three Hunters and replaced with x1 Boromir and x2 Foe Hammer to boost the card draw in that deck in a hope that this will make it more efficient. Erestor’s discard ability while strong doesn’t really help with card draw per say because you have to discard something as well and the only cards you want to discard from the deck are additional copies of Steward. Boromir combos nicely with Halbarad and in a pinch can provide an emergency defense or even two or can both defend and then counter attack so long as he takes damage.

Now the Dunland Trap is a fairly unique quest with a very different win condition that no other quest features. Rather than questing to victory or taking out a key enemy you instead have to survive an onslaught of Dunlendings at the end without any of your heroes falling in battle. Normally even with a hero loss (or two) towards the end of a scenario you can still pull off a win if your board state if strong enough and if you are close enough to the finish line for it to not really matter. In this quest if a hero is destroyed at any point while you are at Stage 3 you lose the game. You can however lose a hero during Stage 1 or 2 and still theoretically win but this would be hard considering you need every bit of strength you can muster during Stage 3.

No-Way-Out-3B.jpg
No hero deaths allowed!

I play this game trying to avoid hero deaths whenever possible and will actually concede a game if I lose a hero early on during a game or really anytime right before the very end. In my current Saga Campaign I do not have any names on the Fallen heroes list. Therefore it really isn’t any different from usual for me; trying to avoid hero deaths at all costs.

I haven’t played this quest in quite a while so I hope to get lucky and manage a win on the first attempt. Time to kick things off!

Setup and Opening Hands

The Three Hunters (as usual) starts the game as the first player. The opening hand I draw is x2 Dunedain Warning, Send for Aid, Galadriel, Dagger of Westernesse and Eldahir. Not a great starting hand as there is no resource acceleration and I will lose the Dagger when I fall into the trap on Stage 2. Eldahir is a decent ally to keep around as he is a great backup defender and Send for Aid could be a great sidequest to have in play during Stage 3 but ultimately I decide to mulligan. I draw Captains Wisdom, Galadriel, Dunedain Warning, Gandalf, Foe Hammer and Faramir. I quite like this opening hand and the potential it has and I love Faramir as the only ally I can keep (the trap effect on Stage 2) as he provides a big willpower boost. I will need Miruvor or UC in the opening hand of the other deck to counter Captain’s Wisdom exhausting Gimli however.
The Last Elven Host draws Wingfoot, Lov, Miruvor, Lindir and x2 Imladris Caregiver. I like this starting hand and drew a copy of Miruvor which is perfect so I keep it.

For quest setup I set Chief Turch and Munuv Duv Ravine aside out of play and make Old South Road the active location. I put a Boar Clan Warrior into play engaged with The Three Hunters and a Boar Clan Stalker into play engaged with The Last Elven Host. Finally I put two time counters on Stage 1B. Time for the first resource and planning phase!

Round 1: Stage 1B (0 of 18 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Unlikely Friendship which is great and The Last Elven Host draws Imladris Stargazer who will be extremely useful even without Vilya. I use Captain’s Wisdom and exhaust Gimli to add two resources to him. Boar Clan Warrior is dealt a shadow card and Boar Clan Stalker receives a resource token.

The Three Hunters
32 threat (First Player)
Hand: Unlikely Friendship, Gandalf, Faramir, Galadriel, Dunedain Warning and Foe Hammer.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 3 resources, 0 damage
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-Boar Clan Warrior

Discard Pile:
Captain’s Wisdom

The Last Elven Host
31 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Imladris Stargazer, Wingfoot, Light of Valinor, x2 Imladris Caregiver, Lindir and Miruvor.

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Galdor: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-Boar Clan Stalker (1 resource)

Discard Pile:
Empty

Staging Area/Active Location

Old South Road is the active location

Staging area is empty.

Planning Phase

With some amazing starting hands this should be a breeze and it is time to kick things off. First off I play Unlikely Friendship and place a resource on Gimli and draw Sword that was Broken. Boar Clan Warrior is dealt another shadow card. I play Gandalf with my two tactics resources and 3 of Gimli’s 4 resources. I use Gandalf to do four damage to the Boar Clan Warrior and destroy it. I then use Gimli’s final leadership resource to play Dunedain Warning on Gimli.

The Last Elven Host discards one of the Caregivers to put a resource on Arwen thanks to her discard ability. I play LoV on Elrond and Miruvor on Gimli with those two spirit resources. I then use Galdor’s lore resource to play Wingfoot on Aragorn. I should now have Aragorn and Elrond ready after questing on most rounds. Miruvor is discard to add a resource to Gimli’s resource pool and ready him.

Now I’m going to talk strategy just for a second here. This quest stage has a very decent 18 quest points so takes a little while to beat but only has two time counters and whenever time counters run out you discard your hand. You do get to draw back up to 2 and then get a third card from the resource phase which occurs right after time counters are removed during the refresh phase so you do gain card draw in a way from this quest stage effect but will lose whatever you still have in your hand every second turn which is the most pressing effect. Essentially it is imperative to use cards quickly as you will lose them otherwise. This is why I am using so much resource acceleration and using as many cards as I can in this first turn. I am going to try and take control of the board state as much as possible and as quickly as possible so that when I lose several allies and potentially attachments as well to the “trap effect” on quest stage 2 I am not completely screwed and am able to build back up to take on quest stage 3. Even if you turtle through Stage 1 you are going to have to discard almost all of the allies you build up by the time you get to Stage 2 so I am going to move quickly even if that means moving towards the trap much faster.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Three Hunters commits Gandalf and Aragorn (naming Enemy with Wingfoot) and The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen and Galdor for a total of 14 willpower. I reveal Hills of Dunland and Plains of Enedwraith. This places a total of 10 progress which clears Old South Road and puts 6 progress on Stage 1B.

Travel

Hills of Dunland is an AWFUL location that punishes you for every turn it stays in the staging area. I travel to it right away to get rid of it as soon as possible. To travel there each player must draw a card (Galadriel’s Handmaiden and Send for Aid). I then have to trigger the effect on Hills of Dunland as it is still in staging as I pay the travel cost. I discard the top card of the encounter deck with each deck but miraculously neither encounter card is an enemy so no enemies are put into play directly engaged by its effect! Some insane luck which is exactly what I need this early on.

Hills-of-Dunland.jpg
Easily my most hated card in this quest. If it sticks around and you can’t travel there it can completely overwhelm you with enemies.

I am forced however to place another resource token on Boar Clan Stalker.

Encounter

There are no enemies in staging so nothing occurs.

Combat

Gimli is declared as the defender against Boar Clan Stalker and I pay the single resource in Gimli’s resource pool to ready Galdor. The shadow card dealt to the Stalker gives it +2 attack (because Gimli is undamaged) and Gimli takes 1 damage. I counter attack with Elrond, Galdor and Legolas and the Stalker is destroyed placing 2 progress on Hills of Dunland thanks to Legolas and his ability.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken. 1 time counter is removed from quest Stage 1B and it now has a single time counter remaining.

Round 2: Stage 1B (6 of 18 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Guardian of Arnor and The Last Elven Host draws Miruvor. I was really hoping for another Captain’s Wisdom, Unlikely Friendship or Steward of Gondor so I could potentially play Galadriel this turn but I will not be able to now.

The Three Hunters
33 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Guardian of Arnor, Galadriel, Send for Aid, Foe Hammer and Faramir

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage. Wingfoot attached.
— Gimli: 1 resource, 1 damage. Dunedain Warning attached.
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Captain’s Wisdom, Unlikely Friendship and Gandalf

The Last Elven Host
32 threat (First Player)
Hand: Miruvor, Lindir, Imladris Caregiver, Stargazer and Galadriel’s Handmaiden

— Elrond: 2 resources, 0 damage. Light of Valinor attached.
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Galdor: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Imladris Caregiver and Miruvor

Staging Area/Active Location

Plains of Enedwaith is in the staging area.

Hills of Dunland (with 2 of 3 progress) is the active location.

Planning Phase

I am going to lose what is left in each decks hand at the end of this turn and will therefore lose all the high cost allies in The Three Hunters hand which is quite unfortunate. It would have been nice to get one of them in play this turn.

First off The Last Elven Host discards Lindir to put a resource on Elrond via Arwen’s ability. I pay two lore resources (one from Elrond and one from Galdor) to play Caregiver. I then play Handmaiden and reduce threat by 1 with the two remaining resource on Elrond and Miruvor (on Gimli) with the resource on Arwen. Only Stargazer remains in hand.

The Three Hunters simpy pays Send for Aid for 1 leadership resource.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, Caregiver AND Handmaiden and The Three Hunters commits Aragorn (naming enemy with Wingfoot) for a total of 13 willpower. I reveal Hithlaegir Stream and In Need of Rest. I attach In Need of Rest to Aragorn and total willpower becomes 11 instead. There is 5 threat in staging so I place 6 progress one point of which clears Hills of Dunland as the other 5 are placed on Stage 1B.

Travel

I travel to Hithlaeglir Stream. The extra card during the resource phase will be handy considering I have to discard both decks hands at the end of this round. It is also 3 threat which is nice to get out of the staging area.

Encounter

No enemies are in play.

Combat

No enemies are in play.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken. 1 time counter is removed from quest Stage 1B. Each deck discards its hand and draws 2 cards. The Three Hunters draws Unlikely Friendship and Sneak Attack and The Last Elven Host draws Burning Brand and Glorfindel. Aragorn suffers one point of damage from the time counter being removed. Stage 1B is reset back to 2 time counters.

Round 3: Stage 1B (9 of 18 progress)

Resource Phase

Each deck draws two cards instead of one thanks to the active location. So long as I can clear quest stage 1B before it runs out of time counters again I should get to keep all the cards in my hand for Stage 2 and 3. This is now my goal: to reach Stage 2 by the end of the next round avoiding the hand discard effect on Stage 1 triggering again.
The Three Hunters draws Gondorian Shield and Hands Upon the Bow and The Last Elven Host draws UC and Silver Harp.

The Three Hunters
34 threat (First Player)
Hand: Hands Upon the Bow, Gondorian Shield, Unlikely Friendship, Sneak Attack.

— Aragorn: 2 resources, 0 damage. Wingfoot attached. In Need of Rest condition attached.
— Gimli: 1 resource, 1 damage. Dunedain Warning and Miruvor attached
— Legolas: 2 resources, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Captain’s Wisdom, Unlikely Friendship, Gandalf, Guardian of Arnor, Sword that was Broken, Galadriel, Foe Hammer, Faramir

The Last Elven Host
32 threat (Second Player)
Hand: UC, Silver Harp, Burning Brand and Glorfindel

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. LoV attached.
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Galdor: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Imladris Caregiver

-Galadriels Handmaiden

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Caregiver, Miruvor, Lindir, Stargazer

Staging Area/Active Location

Plains of Enedwaith are in the staging area.

Hithlaegir Stream is the active location (with 0 of 4 progress).

Send for Aid player side quest is also in staging.

Planning Phase

So The Three Hunters uses Unlikely Friendship and places a resource on Gimli and draws another copy of Hands Upon the Bow.

The Last Elven Host discards Glorfindel to place a resource on Arwen thanks to her ability. I pay two spirit resources to use Silver Harp and attach it to Arwen. I then pay two lore resources to play Burning Brand on Elrond. I discard UC and return it to hand with Silver Harp to heal 1 damage off Gimli.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Three Hunters commits Aragorn (naming enemy for Wingfoot) and The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, Caregiver and Handmaiden for a total of 13 willpower. I reveal Dunland Tribesman (readying Aragorn) and each deck draws one card (Gandalf and Elrond’s Counsel) and then reveal another Hithlaeglir Stream.

A total of 7 threat so I place 6 progress 4 of which clear the active location bringing the total progress on stage 1B up to 11. Really need to place those last 7 points of progress next turn!

Travel

I travel to the new copy of Hithlaeglir Stream. I will get to draw an additional card during the resource phase with each deck again now which is still highly beneficial and in no way a set back as there are no cards (except the Dunland Tribesman who I am going to take care of shortly!) that punish me for card draw in play right now.

Encounter

The Tribesman has 37 threat so I do not optionally engage him but instead use Hands Upon the Bow for one tactics resource to attack with Legolas and do 2 damage to the Tribesman.

Combat

No engaged enemies.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. I use the second copy of Hands Upon the Bow for a tactics resource to once again attack with Legolas against the Tribesman in staging, this time it destroys the Tribesman placing two progress on the current location. 1 time counter is removed from quest Stage 1B and one now remains. Aragorn suffers one point of damage from the time counter being removed.

Round 4: Stage 1B (11 of 18 progress)

Resource Phase

The Last Elven Host draws another copy of UC and The Three Hunters draws Guardian of Arnor.

The Three Hunters
35 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Guardian of Arnor, Gandalf, Gondorian Shield and Sneak Attack

— Aragorn:.3 resources, 2 damage, Wingfoot attached. In Need of Rest Condition attached.
— Gimli: 3 resources, 0 damage. Dunedain Warning and Miruvor attached.
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Captain’s Wisdom, Unlikely Friendship, Gandalf, Guardian of Arnor, Sword that was Broken, Galadriel, Foe Hammer, Faramir, Unlikely Friendship, x2 Hands upon the Bow

The Last Elven Host
33 threat (First Player)
Hand: x2 UC and Elronds Counsel.

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. Light of Valinor and Burning Brand attached.
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached.
— Galdor: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Imladris Caregiver

-Galadriels Handmaiden

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Caregiver, Miruvor, Lindir, Stargazer, Glorfindel

Staging Area/Active Location

Plains of Enedwaith is in the staging area.

Hithlaeglir Stream is the active location (with 2 of 4 progress)

Send for Aid is also in the staging area.

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters does nothing for now. The Last Elven Host discards UC then returns it to hand with Silver Harp to put one resource on Arwen via her ability. I pay two resources from Arwen’s resource pool to play UC on Gimli. I then play Elrond’s Counsel for 0 and give Galdor +1 willpower and reduce threat by 3. Then I discard UC to heal 2 damage from Aragorn (with Caregiver). I then draw back up to 6 cards with Galdor’s ability and draw: Galadrim Healer x2, Galadriel’s Handmaiden, Cloak of Lorien, Gather Information and Northern Tracker. I play Gather Information for 0.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Three Hunters uses Sneak attack and puts Gandalf into play while The Last Elven Host is committing characters and draws three cards (x2 Elven Mail and Sterner than Steel).

The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, Caregiver and the Handmaiden and The Three Hunters commits Aragorn (naming Enemy with Wingfoot) and Gandalf for a total of 17 willpower. I reveal Boar Clan Stalker (readying Aragorn) and yet another Hithlaeglir Stream. There is a total of 8 threat in staging so I place 9 progress 2 of which clears the active location which places exactly 7 progress on Stage 1B bringing it up to 18 the exact amount needed to advance! I immediately progress to Stage 2A and make Munuv Duv Ravine the active location. I discard Burning Brand, Silver Harp and Miruvor (item attachments) and Galadriels Handmaiden (so each player has only one ally or none in the case of The Three Hunters). I put a Boar Clan Stalker into play engaged with The Last Elven Host and a Boar Clan Warrior into play engaged with The Three Hunters. Each deck shuffles their discard pile into their deck and draws a card. The Three Hunters draws Unlikely Friendship and The Last Elven Host draws Power of Orthanc. A resource token is placed on the Boar Clan Stalker and a shadow card is dealt to the Boar Clan Warrior.

A-Well-Laid-Trap-2B.png
A well laid trap indeed! Although not well laid enough for my heroes!

Travel

Munuv Duv Ravine is the active location so I cannot travel.

Encounter

The Three Hunters optionally engages the Boar Clan Stalker in the staging area.

Combat

Legolas is exhausted from Hands upon the Bow so is of no use this combat phase! I plan to take an undefended attack from the Boar Clan Stalker with no resource tokens and therefore 0 base attack so that I can kill an enemy with Gimli and Aragorn.
Elrond defends against the Boar Clan Stalker engaged with The Last Elven Host and takes no damage as the shadow card has no effect. The Boar Clan Stalker with 0 base attack gets +1 attack from its shadow card and +1 from Munuv Duv and Legolas takes 2 undefended damage. Gimli defends against the Boar Clan Warrior and takes 3 damage as the second shadow card gives +1 attack for each shadow card dealt. Gimli readies with UC and he and Aragorn attack and destroy the Boar Clan Warrior. I use Aragorn’s ability to engage the other Boar Clan Stalker currently engaged with The Last Elven Host. I now immediately advance to Quest Stage 3 as per instructions on Stage 2B. I put Chief Turch into play engaged with the First player and put 10 Time Counters on Stage 3B.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. 1 time counter is removed from quest Stage 3B and nine now remains. Aragorn suffers one point of damage from the time counter being removed. Chief Turch engages The Three Hunters which is now the First player removing another time counter and doing another point of damage to Aragorn.

Round 5: Stage 3B (8 of 10 Time Counters remaining)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters Draws Foe Hammer and The Last Elven Host draws Haldir. I place another resource token on both Boar Clan Stalkers.

The Three Hunters
36 threat (First Player)
Hand: Foe Hammer, Unlikely Friendship, Elven Mail x2, Sterner Than Steel, Guardian of Arnor, Gandalf and Gondorian Shield.

— Aragorn: 4 resource, 2 damage. Wingfoot attached. In Need of Rest condition attached.
— Gimli: 3 resource, 3 damage. Dunedain Warning and UC attached.
— Legolas: 2 resources, 2 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-Boar Clan Stalker (2 resources)

-Boar Clan Stalker (1 resource)

-Chief Turch

Discard Pile:

The Last Elven Host
34 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Haldir, Cloak of Lorien, Power of Orthanc, Handmaiden, x2 Healer and Northern Tracker.

— Elrond: 2 resource, 0 damage. Light Of Valinor attached.
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Galdor: 2 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Caregiver

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Empty

Staging Area/Active Location

Plains of Enedwaith and Hithlaeglir Stream are in the staging area.

Munuv Duv Ravine is the active location.

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters plays Unlikely Friendship and puts a resource on Gimli and draws Armoured Destrier. I also place another resource on each Boar Clan Stalker. I play Armoured Destrier for 2 leadership resources on Gimli. I play Elven Mail for 2 on Elrond. I play Gondorian Shield for 1 on Gimli and finally use all five remaining resources to play Gandalf and deal 4 damage to the Boar Clan Stalker with 3 resources.

The Last Elven Host plays a Galadrim Healer for 2 lore resources to heal 2 damage off all three heroes of The Three Hunters. I then play Handmaiden for 2 resources (one from Elrond and Arwen) and Cloak of Lorien with the final resource and attach it to Elrond.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Three Hunters commits Gandalf and Aragorn (naming enemy for wingfoot) and The Last Elven Host commits Arwen, Elrond, Galdor, Caregiver, Healer and Handmaiden for a total of 18 willpower. I reveal Low on Provisions (dealing the following amount of damage to the following characters: 3 to Gandalf, 1 to Legolas, 1 to Caregiver, 3 to Galdor and 2 to Arwen) and Plains of Enedwaith. A total of 7 threat in staging result in 11 progress being placed. Munuv Duv Ravine is cleared and I place 5 progress on Send for Aid which was chosen as the current quest for the round. One damn progress short of clearing Send for Aid!!!! Devastating!

chief-turch
I can hear Chief Turch laughing at me as I fail to gather additional aid from my allies.

Travel

I travel to one of the copies of Plains of Enedwaith. Both decks have decent hand sizes and great board states so I am not worried about missing out on card draw for a round.

Encounter

No enemies in staging.

Combat

Elrond defends against the weaker Boar Clan Stalker (2 resources) and takes no damage. Gimli defends against the second, readies and discards Chief Turch’s shadow card with Armored Destrier. The second Boar Clan Stalker has a shadow effect that stops it from taking damage until the end of the turn, I cancel this with Sterner than Steel. Gimli then defends against Chief Turch and takes one damage. I ready Gimli with UC and attack the Stalker I weakened with Gandalf earlier with Gimli and Legolas destroying it and clearing the active location thanks to Legolas’s ability.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. 2 time counters are removed from quest Stage 3B and six now remain (one removed because it is the end of the round and the other is removed because Chief Turch engages The Last Elven Host who is now the first player). Aragorn suffers two points of damage from the time counters being removed.

Round 6: Stage 3B (6 of 10 Time Counters Remaining)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Steward of Gondor (oh yeah NOW YOU SHOW UP!) and The Last Elven Host draws Unexpected Courage. Boar Clan Stalker gets another resource.

The Three Hunters
37 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Steward of Gondor, Elven Mail, Foe Hammer and Guardian of Arnor.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 2 damage
— Gimli: 1 resource, 2 damage
— Legolas: 1 resource, 1 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-Boar Clan Stalker (3 resources)

Discard Pile:
Unlikely Friendship, Sterner than Steel, Gandalf

The Last Elven Host
35 threat (First Player)
Hand: UC, Power of Orthanc, Northern Tracker, Galadrim Healer, Haldir of Lorien

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Arwen: 1 resource, 2 damage
— Galdor: 1 resource, 3 damage

Allies:

-Galadriels Handmaiden

-Imladris Caregiver (1 damage)

-Galadrim Healer

Engaged With:

-Chief Turch

Discard Pile:
Empty

Staging Area/Active Location

Hithlaeglir Stream and Plains of Enedwaith are in the staging area.

So is Send for Aid (5 of 6 progress) and Gather Information (0 of 4 progress)

Planning Phase

The Last Elven Host uses Power Of Orthanc first and foremost. Need to get that awful condition attachment off Aragorn once and for all. Both decks raise threat by 2 which hardly matters at this point as I should win within a few more turns. I then discard Northern Tracker to place a resource on Arwen via Arwen’s ability. I play UC for 2 spirit resources and attach it to Gimli and I play the Galadrim Healer for 2 lore resources and heal all damage off The Three Hunters.

The Three Hunters plays Elven Mail for 2 tactics resources and attaches it to Galdor (just paranoid about treachery direct damage etc always nice to have extra hitpoints).

Staging and Quest Resolution

Time to clear Send for Aid to get some strong allies into play for free to help with combat on the last few turns! The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, both Healers, Handmaiden and the Caregiver and The Three Hunters commits Aragorn (naming enemy for wingfoot) for a total of 15 willpower. I reveal Hithlaeglir Foothills (which surges), Hills of Dunland and In Need of Rest. Absolutely Horrendous staging round… probably the worst of this game thus far! Aragorn does not ready as there are no enemies revealed. I have to face the awful Hills of Dunland effect while in staging again and In Need of Rest which I JUST REMOVED with Power of Orthanc is now back…. I attach In Need of Rest to Aragorn and the total willpower is now 13. With 7 threat in staging Send for Aid is easily cleared and each deck gets to search the top ten cards of its remaining draw deck and put one ally into play for free. The Three Hunters puts Gandalf into play this way and does 4 damage to the Boar Clan Stalker. The Last Elven Host puts an Imladris Stargazer into play with this effect.

Travel

I try to make a very tactical move here and instead of traveling to Hills of Dunland or even Hithlaeglir Foothills (both of which have awful effects so you want to travel to them as soon as possible) I travel to Plains of Enedwaith which stops players from drawing a card during the resource phase. This means until I clear this location I wont draw cards and therefore won’t trigger either of the effects on those two nasty locations in the staging area. Even if I clear the Plains next round I still avoided both other locations effects for a whole round and if I’m lucky I only have a few rounds to go!

Plains-of-Enedwaith.jpg
I love using Encounter card effects against the Encounter Deck. Suck it card draw hate!

Encounter

No enemies in staging.

Combat

Gimli defends against Chief Turch, takes 1 damage (no shadow effect) and readies with Armored Destrier. He then defends against the Boar Clan Stalker which gets +1 attack and attacks again due to shadow effects. Gimli readies with UC to defend again and again the enemy gets a shadow card initiating another attack. Elrond defends this final attack and takes no damage due to no shadow card effect.

Gandalf, Gimli and Legolas counter attack the Boar Clan Stalker absolutely decimating it. I do not place progress with Legolas’s ability as I want to keep the Plains of Enedwaith around.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. 2 time counters are removed from quest Stage 3B and four now remain (one removed because it is the end of the round and the other is removed because Chief Turch engages The Three Hunters who is now the first player). Aragorn suffers two points of damage from the time counters being removed.

Round 7: Stage 3B (4 of 10 Time Counters Remaining)

Resource Phase

Neither deck draws a card as the active location stops players from drawing a card during the resource phase.

The Three Hunters
40 threat (First Player)
Hand: Steward of Gondor, Foe Hammer and Guardian of Arnor.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 2 damage. Wingfoot attached. In Need of Rest condition attached.
— Gimli: 2 resources, 1 damage. Gondorian Shield, Armored Destrier, Dunedain Warning and x2 Unexpected Courage attached.
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-Chief Turch

Discard Pile:
Unlikely Friendship, Sterner than Steel, Gandalf x2

The Last Elven Host
38 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Haldir

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Arwen: 1 resource, 2 damage
— Galdor: 1 resource, 3 damage

Allies:

-Galadriels Handmaiden

-Imladris Caregiver (1 damage)

-Galadrim Healer x2

-Imladris Stargazer

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Northern Tracker, Power of Orthanc

Staging Area/Active Location

Hills of Dunland, Hithlaeglir Stream and Hithlaeglir Foothills are in the staging area.

Plains of Enedwaith is the current location.

Gather Information is also in staging (0 of 4 progress).

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters plays Steward of Gondor on Gimli for two leadership resources and exhausts Steward to put him back on two resources. The Last Elven Host discards Haldir to heal 2 damage from Aragorn. Nothing else, time to bring this quest home.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Three Hunters commits Aragorn (naming Enemy with Wingfoot) and The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, both Healers, Caregiver and the Handmaiden for a total of 15 willpower. I choose Gather Information to be the current quest this round. I reveal Boar Clan Warrior and Dunland Berserker (and ready Aragorn). Total of 9 threat so I place 6 progress 2 of which clears Banks of Enedwaith and the other 4 is the exact amount necessary to clear Gather Information! The Three Hunters searches for Feint and The Last Elven Host searches for Elven Light. Both are added to each decks hand.

Travel

Hills of Dunland is probably not even going to trigger once (If I have calculated correctly I should win during the refresh phase this round!) so instead I travel to the Hithlaeglir Foothills.

Encounter

The Three Hunters engages Boar Clan Warrior optionally and then the Dunland Berserker engages The Three Hunters. I remove two time counters from Stage 3B due to Chief Turches ability and only two time counters remain! Aragorn is dealt two damage.

Combat

I pay one tactics resource to use Feint on Chief Turch stopping him from attacking. Gimli defends against the Dunland Berserker (no shadow effect) and readies with Armored Destrier and discards the shadow card from Boar Clan Warrior. He then defends against the Boar Clan Warrior and readies with UC. I counter attack hard and Gimli and Aragorn together destroy the Berserker, Gimli readies with his second copy of UC and then attacks with Legolas to destroy the Boar Clan Warrior. Both fall and only Turch remains!

Refresh

Here we go! Time for the last time counters to come off! All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1 (The Three Hunters is at 41 threat and The Last Elven Host is at 39 threat). The first player token passes and Chief Turch engages The Last Elven Host which removes a time counter leaving only one remaining! Aragorn takes one damage because of this. Before the refresh phase ends I discard Elven Light to heal 2 damage from Aragorn (Caregiver). The refresh phase ends and the final time counter is removed!

Both decks make engagement checks against the zero enemies in play! Chief Turch is the only enemy in play and makes an immediate attack. Gimli defends and takes one damage (Shadow effect states that Chief Turch cannot take damage until the end of the round which is hilarious). No heroes are destroyed by this single attack and I win!

80 Total Threat. 7 total damage remaining on heroes and I won right before the 7th round ended (so +60 to score). 6 Victory points thanks to Gather Information, Send for Aid, Old South Road and Munuv Duv Ravine. Final Score of: 141!

Conclusion:
I had a lot more fun recording this game than the previous one. The decks performed a little better and by the end I had a very powerful board state set up. It obviously would have been better if I had been able to play a few nice offensive or defensive allies with The Three Hunters deck but I simply could not due to so many being discarded early on due to Stage 1B’s time effects and then simply not drawing any for more or less the rest of the game except for another Guardian late game that I was never able to play. Other than this and not ever getting Vilya out both decks performed admirably and beat a quest that can be an absolute demon to play. I will admit that the encounter deck and quest did not throw that much at me and I got fairly lucky except for a few nasty staging rounds. I also didn’t draw or use Test of Will (and didn’t really need to). This quest really focuses on combat once you clear the first quest stage however so it didn’t matter that much that I didn’t draw Test of Will or get Vilya set up. So long as I had combat under control I was fine and The Three Hunters did that easily. I did abuse Gandalf pretty heavily but definitely less so than in the last game.

Very happy with this victory and had a blast playing this quest with these decks. Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn really showed their worth cutting down any Dunlendings that got in their way and Elrond was a key backup defender after receiving LoV first turn.

Please let me know if you spy any mistakes at all grammatical or mechanical. Feel free to leave feedback. I will be continuing these turn by turn reports so if you have any suggestions or requests (nothing overly punishing or overly long or it won’t be nearly as fun recording) for an upcoming quest please let me know. Hope you enjoyed reading!
