Turn by Turn Report – The Fate Of Numenor

Time for another Turn by Turn report! Today I am playing The Fate of Numenor. I have always loved the part of Tolkien’s mythos that involves The Lost City of Numenor and its people and fate so I love that the current cycle is so connected with this part of Middle Earth. This quest is very easy but has cool mechanics with double sided locations and a great exploration theme. The start of the quest is very tame as no enemies start in play and the quest itself is quite location and treachery heavy so enemies are sometimes scarce. Starting hands won’t need to be that great so less pressure on drawing great staring hands than usual. High willpower will be necessary at some point though so I will need to build up strong questing allies eventually.

Setup and Opening Hands

I start off with The Three Hunters as the first player so that the combat deck is leading the way (best for nasty treacheries or effects that involve enemies). My initial hand is Gandalf x2, Guardian of Arnor, Galadriel, Foe Hammer and Sterner than Steel. No resource acceleration and just high cost allies and events so I mulligan and draw Foe Hammer, Sneak Attack, Captain’s Wisdom, Boromir, Rumil and Armoured Destrier.

The Last Elven Host draws Northern Tracker, Vilya, Elven Light, Silver Harp, LoV and Cloak of Lorien which is a great starting hand so I keep it.

For quest setup I prepare the uncharted deck, add two copies of Lost Island to the staging area (Lost Island side face up) and set the quest to 1B.

Round 1: Stage 1B (0 of 20 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Halbarad and The Last Elven Host draws Miruvor which is perfect for Captain’s Wisdom. I use Captain’s Wisdom and place two resources on Gimli and exhaust him.

The Three Hunters
32 threat (First Player)
Hand: Halbarad, Foe Hammer, Sneak Attack, Captain’s Wisdom, Boromir, Rumil and Armoured Destrier

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 3 resources, 0 damage
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Calphon (objective ally)

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Empty

The Last Elven Host
31 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Miruvor, Northern Tracker, Vilya, Elven Light, Silver Harp, LoV and Cloak of Lorien

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Galdor: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Empty

Staging Area/Active Location

There are two copies of Lost Island in the staging area.

No active location.

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters plays Armored Destrier on Gimli with two leadership resources.

The Last Elven Host discards Elven Light to place a resource on Arwen thanks to her ability. I play LoV on Elrond with a resource from Arwen’s resource pool. I play Miruvor on Gimli with her other resource. Finally I play Vilya on Elrond with his resource and Galdors single resource. Already have him partially voltron-ed up first planning phase! I discard Miruvor to add a resource to Gimli and ready him. Time to quest!

Staging and Quest Resolution

I can’t actually place progress on the current quest yet as you have to explore locations to place progress on this quest stage and there is no active location at the start of the game. I only need to quest successfully to avoid threat gain. I commit Elrond, Arwen, Erestor and Calphon for a total of 9 willpower.

I reveal Drowned Dead and Steep Plateau. Total of 7 Threat in staging so I quest successfully.

Travel

I travel to Steep Plateau so I can scout out one of the uncharted locations and hopefully find a relatively safe location. I’m in no rush to travel to a nasty uncharted location.

Steep-Plateau.jpg
“Legolas! What do your Elf-eyes see?”

Encounter

I optionally engage the Drowned Dead with The Three Hunters.

Combat

Gimli defends against the Drowned Dead, readies with Armored Destrier and takes 2 damage (shadow card has no effect). I counter attack with Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn and destroy the Drowned Dead placing two progress on Steep Plateau with Legolas. I exhaust Elrond and Vilya to play the top card of The Last Elven Host’s deck for free. I reveal Northern Tracker! Hell yes!

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 2: Stage 1B (0 of 20 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Gandalf (Bingo!) and The Last Elven Host draws Burning Brand (also nice).

The Three Hunters
33 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Boromir, Gandalf, Sneak Attack, Halbarad, Rumil and Foe Hammer.

— Aragorn: 2 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 3 resources, 2 damage. Armored Destrier attached.
— Legolas: 2 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Captains Wisdom

The Last Elven Host
32 threat (First Player)
Hand: Cloak of Lorien, Silver Harp, Northern Tracker and Burning Brand.

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. LoV and Vilya attached.
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Galdor: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Calphon

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Elven Light, Miruvor.

Staging Area/Active Location

There are two copies of Lost Island in the staging area.

Steep Plateau is the active location (with 2 of 3 progress).

Planning Phase

The Last Elven Host discards Northern Tracker to place a resource on Arwen thanks to her ability. I play Silver Harp with Arwen’s two resources and Burning Brand with my two lore resources and attach it to Elrond.

The Three Hunters plays Boromir for 4 tactics resources.

Staging and Quest Resolution

First off I use Sneak Attack Gandalf with The Three Hunters and draw 3 cards: Galadriel, Elven Mail and Guardian of Arnor. The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, Northern Tracker and Calphon and The Three Hunters commits Gandalf for a total of 14 willpower.

I reveal Mysterious Fog and choose to give each Lost Island +1 threat. I then reveal Steep Plateau. A total of 7 Threat in staging so I place 7 progress only 1 of which has any effect clearing the active location (Steep Plateau) which then places 3 progress on Stage 1B. The effect on Steep Plateau then allows me to look at the facedown side of a copy of Lost Island. I look at one of them and reveal Flooded Ruins (which contributes its 3 threat to staging when it is the active location).

Travel

I decide to play it safe once more and travel to the new copy of Steep Plateau. I am still placing progress on Stage 1B this way and am not having to add new uncharted locations to the staging area by traveling to the plateaus instead. I know which Lost Island is Flooded Ruins now so can still safely travel to it in a round or two once I have more willpower built up. I exhaust Vilya and Elrond and play Miruvor for free. I attach it to Gimli.

Encounter

There are no enemies in staging.

Combat

There are no engaged enemies.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 3: Stage 1B (3 of 20 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Gondorian Shield and The Last Elven Host draws another Cloak of Lorien.

The Three Hunters
34 threat (First Player)
Hand: Gandalf, Galadriel, Elven Mail, Guardian of Arnor, Foe Hammer, Rumil, Halbarad and Gondorian Shield.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 3 resource, 2 damage. Armored Destrier and Miruvor attached.
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Boromir

-Calphon

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Captains Wisdom and Sneak Attack

The Last Elven Host
33 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Cloak of Lorien x2

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. LoV, Burning Brand and Vilya attached.
— Arwen: 2 resources, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached.
— Galdor: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Northern Tracker.

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Elven Light, Miruvor and Northern Tracker

Staging Area/Active Location

There are two copies of Lost Island in the Staging area.

Steep Plateau (with 0 of 3 progress) is the active location.

Planning Phase

I discard Miruvor and add a resource to Gimli and give him +1 willpower. I then discard Cloak of Lorien (and return it to hand with Silver Harp) to put a resource on Aragorn with Arwen’s ability. The Three Hunters plays Elven Mail and Gondorian Shield with its three tactics resources (on Elrond and Gimli respectively). I then play Galadriel with 3 of Gimli’s 4 resources. The top five cards of The Three Hunter’s deck are: Dunedain Warning, Feint, Sneak Attack, Rivendell Blade and Feint. I play Rivendell Blade for free on Legolas (for Foe Hammer!) and put the cards back in the following order top to bottom: Sneak Attack (for Gandalf again, Dunedain Warning (to further buff Gimli), Feint and Feint (don’t need these at all right now).

The Last Elven Host plays both Cloaks of Lorien (one on Elrond and one on Galdor). I then draw back up to 6 cards with Galdor’s ability. I draw Test of Will, Dwarven Tomb, UC, Stargazer and x2 Elrond’s Counsel. I save Arwen’s two resources in case I need Test of Will. I will play UC and/or Stargazer next turn.

Staging and Quest Resolution

I use Elrond’s Counsel to reduce threat by 3 and boost Elrond by +1 willpower. The Three Hunters commits Galadriel, Calphon and Aragorn and The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor and Northern Tracker for a total of 16 willpower. I reveal Throngs of Unfaithful (which has Surge), Lingering Malevolence (which I cancel with Test of Will for one spirit resource) and Mysterious Fog (I give each Lost Island +1 threat). There is a total of 7 threat in staging so I place 9 progress easily clearing Steep Plateau and placing another 3 progress on Stage 1B thanks to clearing this location. I look at the facedown side of the other copy of Lost Island in staging and reveal another copy of Flooded Ruins. Not really much in the way of choices here….

Travel

I travel to one of the Lost Island’s revealing Flooded Ruins. I add another copy of Lost Island to the staging area from the uncharted deck.

Encounter

The Three Hunters optionally engages Throngs of Unfaithful.

Combat

Gimli defends against the Throngs of Unfaithful and readies with Armored Destrier. The shadow card has a “if this attack destroys an ally..” effect so Gimli takes no damage. I destroy the Throngs of Unfaithful with Legolas and Boromir. Legolas places 2 progress on Flooded Ruins and I use Foe Hammer to draw three cards (Sneak attack, Dunedain Warning and Feint). The effect on Throngs of Unfaithful triggers and I discard Sneak Attack from the bottom of The Three Hunters deck which costs less than 2 so I return Throngs of Unfaithful to the top of the encounter deck. Throngs indeed!

Throngs-of-Unfaithful.jpg
I have a feeling these guys are going to stick around for some time…

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 4: Stage 1B (6 of 20 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Feint and The Last Elven Host draws Guardian of Rivendell.

The Three Hunters
35 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Feint x2, Sneak Attack, Dunedain Warning, Gandalf, Halbarad, Rumil, Guardian of Arnor.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 2 resource, 2 damage. Armored Destrier and Gondorian Shield attached
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage. Rivendell Blade attached

Allies:

-Boromir.

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Captain’s Wisdom, Sneak Attack, Foe Hammer, Sneak Attack and Galadriel

The Last Elven Host
31 threat (First Player)
Hand: Dwarven Tomb, UC, Guardian of Rivendell, Stargazer and Elronds Counsel.

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. LoV, Burning Brand, Elven Mail, Cloak of Lorien and Vilya attached.
— Arwen: 2 resources, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached.
— Galdor: 1 resource, 0 damage. Cloak of Lorien attached.

Allies:

-Northern Tracker

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Elven Light, Miruvor, Northern Tracker, Miruvor, Elronds Counsel and Test of Will.

Staging Area/Active Location

There are two copies of Lost Island in the staging area.

Flooded Ruins (with 2 of 5 progress) is the active location.

Planning Phase

The Last Elven Host goes first. Time to advance the board state big time! I use Arwen’s two resources to play UC on Elrond. I then discard nothing (Silver Harp) to put a second resource on Elrond. I play Stargazer with Elronds two resources. I look at the top five cards of my draw deck and reveal: Gildor, Caregiver, Handmaiden, Healer and Dwarven Tomb. I put them back in the following order top to bottom: Gildor, Healer, Caregiver, Handmaiden and Dwarven Tomb. I then exhaust Elrond and Vilya to play Gildor for free. I ready Elrond with UC.

The Three Hunters plays Dunedain Warning for 1 leadership resource and attaches it to Gimli.

Staging and Quest Resolution

I play Sneak Attack Gandalf before anything and reduce The Three Hunters threat by 5. I also play Elronds Counsel and reduce The Last Elven Host’s threat by 3 and give +1 willpower to Elrond.

The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, Gildor and Northern Tracker and The Three Hunters commits Gandalf for a total of 17 willpower.

I reveal Throngs of Unfaithful, Steep Plateau and Soulless Cadaver. There is a total of 9 Threat in staging plus the 3 from Flooded Ruin’s effect for a total of 12. I place 5 progress clearing the active location and placing 5 progress on Stage 1B due to clearing said location. There is now a total of 11 out of 20 progress on Stage 1B.

Travel

I travel to the other Flooded Ruins as I am starting to build up a nice board state and should easily be able to deal with its extra threat once again. This adds a new copy of Lost Island to the staging area from the Uncharted deck.

Encounter

The Three Hunters optionally engages Throngs of Unfaithful again. The Last Elven Host optionally engages Soulless Cadaver so that it’s effect does not discard both copies of Feint from The Three Hunters hand (When Soulless Cadaver engages you place each card in your hand with 2 or less cost on the bottom of your deck). This places Dwarven Tomb on the bottom of The Last Elven Host’s deck.

Combat

I use Feint on the Soulless Cadaver. Gimli defends the Throngs of Unfaithful and readies with Armored Destrier. The shadow effect makes the enemy attack again and discards Foe Hammer from the bottom of The Three Hunters deck. Gimli defends once more and takes no damage (no shadow effect this time). Elrond and Legolas attack the Soulless Cadaver and destroy it (this is why I used Feint and didn’t just defend with Elrond with Burning Brand). Legolas places 2 progress on the active location. Boromir and Aragorn destroy the Throngs of Unfaithful and this time I discard Fornost Bowman from its effect and it remains in the discard pile.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 5: Stage 1B (11 of 20 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Dagger of Westernesse and The Last Elven Host draws Galadrim Healer.

The Three Hunters
31 threat (First Player)
Hand: Feint, Gandalf, Rumil, Halbarad, Guardian of Arnor and Dagger of Westernesse.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 1 resource, 2 damage. Armored Destrier, Dunedain Warning and Gondorian Shield attached.
— Legolas: 2 resources, 0 damage. Rivendell Blade attached.

Allies:

-Boromir

-Calphon

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Captain’s Wisdom, Sneak Attack, Foe Hammer, Sneak Attack, Galadriel, Sneak Attack, Feint, Foe Hammer and Fornost Bowman.

The Last Elven Host
29 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Guardian of Rivendell and Galadrim Healer.

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. LoV, Vilya, Burning Brand, Elven Mail, Cloak of Lorien and UC attached.
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached.
— Galdor: 2 resource, 0 damage. Cloak of Lorien attachd.

Allies:

-Northern Tracker

-Stargazer

-Gildor

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Elven Light, Northern Tracker, Miruvor, Elronds Counsel, Test of Will and Elronds Counsel.

Staging Area/Active Location

There are two copies of Lost Island and a copy of Steep Plateau in the staging area.

Flooded Ruins (with 2 of 5 progress) is the active location.

Planning Phase

To start things off I discard Guardian of Rivendell to Arwen’s ability to put 1  resource on Aragorn. The Three Hunters plays Rumil for four tactics resources. Yes his ability does nothing in this situation as there are no enemies in play but his 2 willpower and attack are both incredibly handy and I have a very nice board state set up so far so he just strengthens it further. Even if a bunch of enemies appear in the next few turns I should easily be able to dispatch them. The Last Elven Host plays Galadrim Healer for 2 lore resources and Gimli’s 2 damage is healed. I use Stargazer to look at the top 5 cards of The Last Elven Host’s deck. I reveal in order: Test of Will, Caregiver, Handmaiden, Dwarven Tomb and Galahadrim’s Greeting. I place them back in the following order top to bottom: Handmaiden, Test of Will, Caregiver, Greeting and Tomb.
I exhaust Vilya and Elrond to play Handmaiden for free and I ready Elrond with UC.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Three hunters commits Aragorn and Calphon and The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, Gildor, Northern Tracker, Healer and Handmaiden for a total of 18 Willpower. I reveal Ruins of Ages Past (Doomed 2) which adds an extra copy of Lost Island to the staging area and shuffles each copy of Lost Island in the staging area around. I then reveal Curse of the Downfallen which kills the Healer, Handmaiden and Stargazer (1 damage to all non-objective allies 2 or less cost). Recalculated willpower is 15.

The threat in staging is 7 plus the 3 from Flooded Ruins effect is a total of 10. 5 progress clears Flooded Ruins placing 5 progress on Stage 1B bringing it up to 16 total.

Travel

I travel to a copy of Lost Island and reveal Cursed Temple (characters with less than 2 willpower do not ready during the refresh phase). I add a copy of Lost Island from the uncharted deck to the staging area.

Encounter

No enemies in play.

Combat

No enemies in play.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 6: Stage 1B (16 of 20 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Sterner than Steel and The Last Elven Host draws Test of Will.

The Three Hunters
34 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Dagger of Westernesse, Feint, Sterner than Steel, Gandalf, Guardian of Arnor and Halbarad.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 2 resources, 0 damage. Armored Destrier, Dunedain Warning and Gondorian Shield attached.
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage. Rivendell Blade attached.

Allies:

The Last Elven Host
31 threat (First Player)
Hand: Test of Will

— Elrond: 2 resources, 0 damage. LoV, Vilya, Burning Brand, Elven Mail, Cloak of Lorien and UC attached.
— Arwen: 2 resources, 0 damage. Silver Harp
— Galdor: 1 resource, 0 damage. Cloak of Lorien attached.

Allies:

-Northern Tracker

-Gildor

-Calphon

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Elven Light, Northern Tracker, Miruvor, Elronds Counsel, Test of Will and Elronds Counsel, Guardian of Rivendell, Galadrim Healer, Handmaiden and Stargazer.

Staging Area/Active Location

There are three copies of Lost Island and a copy of Steep Plateau in the staging area.

The active location is Cursed Temple (0 of 3 progress).

Planning Phase

The Last Elven Host exhausts Elrond and Vilya to play Caregiver for free. I exhaust UC to ready Elrond. The Three Hunters plays Dagger of Westernesse for 1 on Legolas.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, Gildor and the Galadrim Healer and The Three Hunters commits Aragorn and Rumil for a total of 16 willpower.

I reavel Aimless Wandering and have to remove 3 willpower’s worth of characters from the quest (three copies of lost island in staging) so remove Gildor from the quest (now 13 total willpower). I then reveal Lingering Malevolence but don’t need to cancel it because it should have no effect. I reveal Dwarven Tomb from the bottom of The Last Elven Host’s deck and do not have to discard Test of Will! Guessed correctly! A total of 7 threat against 13 willpower allows me to clear Cursed Temple and place 3 progress on Stage 1B. It is now at 19 progress and I should advance to Stage 2 next turn!

Travel

I travel to another Lost Island (as I am saving the copy of Steep Plateau for later so that I can try and find Shrine of Morgoth more easily) and reveal another Cursed Temple! Looks like yet again Northern Tracker and Calphon will remain exhausted! The Caregiver will also remain exhausted.

Encounter

No enemies in play.

Combat

No enemies in play.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 7: Stage 1B (19 of 20 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Fornost Bowman and The Last Elven Host draws Galahadrims Greeting.

The Three Hunters
35 threat (First Player)
Hand: Fornost Bowman, Feint, Guardian of Arnor, Sterner than Steel, Gandalf and Halbarad.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 3 resources, 0 damage. Armored Destrier, Dunedain Warning and Gondorian Shield attached.
— Legolas: 2 resources, 0 damage. Rivendell Blade and Dagger of Westernesse attached.

Allies:

-Boromir

-Rumil

-Calphon

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Captain’s Wisdom, Sneak Attack, Foe Hammer, Sneak Attack, Galadriel, Sneak Attack, Feint, Foe Hammer and Fornost Bowman.

The Last Elven Host
32 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Galahadrim’s Greeting and Test of Will

— Elrond: 3 resources, 0 damage. LoV, Vilya, Burning Brand, Elven Mail, Cloak of Lorien and UC attached.
— Arwen: 3 resource, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached.
— Galdor: 2 resources, 0 damage. Cloak of Lorien attached.

Allies:

-Northern Tracker

-Caregiver

-Gildor

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Elven Light, Northern Tracker, Miruvor, Elronds Counsel, Test of Will and Elronds Counsel, Guardian of Rivendell, Galadrim Healer, Handmaiden, Stargazer and Dwarven Tomb.

Staging Area/Active Location

There are three copies of Lost Island and a copy of Steep Plateau in the staging area.

Cursed Temple (with 0 of 3 progress) is the active location.

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters plays Fornost Bowman for 3 tactics resources and Guardian of Arnor for 3 leadership resources. The Last Elven Host plays Greeting for 3 spirit resources to lower each decks threat by 2. I discard Test of Will (and return it to hand with Silver Harp) to put a resource on Aragorn in case I need feint this turn. It will be handy to have it up my sleeve while advancing to Stage 2.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Three Hunters commits Rumil, Aragorn and Guardian of Arnor and The Last Elven Host commits Gildor, Galdor, Arwen and Elrond for a total of 16 Willpower.

I reveal Servant of the Deceiver, Throngs of Unfaithful (which Surges) and Ruins of Ages Past (which I cancel with Test of Will so I only take the Doomed 2). A total of 11 Threat so I place 5 progress which clears Cursed Temple and places 3 progress on Stage 1B.
I immediately advance to Stage 2A! I add two copies of Lost Island from the Uncharted deck to the staging area and add Shrine of Morgoth to the staging area Lost Island side faceup. I shuffle all copies of Lost Island so that I don’t know which is the Shrine.

Servant-of-the-Deceiver.jpg
Finally an enemy worthy of my Sword, Bow and Axe!

Travel

I travel to one of the copies of Lost Island and….

I arrive at yet another Cursed Temple.. several allies reveal exhausted once again due to its incredibly annoying effect. At this point I no longer have to add copies of Lost Island to the staging area when I travel to uncharted locations which means I only have the 5 remaining to deal with. I also get to add uncharted locations to the victory display when I explore them so even if encounter effects put more in play at least it won’t be the same ones I clear from now on which is also nice.

A-Fateful-Discovery-2B.jpg
No more constant stream on uncharted locations!!

Encounter

The Three Hunters optionally engages Servant of the Deceiver. Throngs of Unfaithful then also engages The Three Hunters. Servant reveals the top card of The Three Hunters deck and reveals Unlikely Friendship which costs less than 2. Servant gets +2 attack and Unlikely Friendship goes to the bottom of my deck.

Combat

Servant turns out to be an absolute joke at this point because of my board state. I use feint and stop it from attacking at all. I then defend against the Throngs with Gimli who readies with Armored Destrier and takes no damage (no shadow effect). Legolas and several other warriors descend upon the Servant and fill it full of several arrows and deep sword wounds. I leave the Throngs of Unfaithful alone because they will now definitely return to play if I destroy them (I know that Unlikely Friendship is on the bottom of my deck because of the Servants nasty effect) and they may also help to reduce the cost of Halbarad.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 8: Stage 2B (- of – progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Gondorian Shield and The Last Elven Host draws Dwarven Tomb.

The Three Hunters
36 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Sterner than Steel, Gondorian Shield, Gandalf and Halbarad.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 1 resource, 0 damage. Dunedain Warning, Armored Destrier and Shield attached.

Staging Area/Active Location

There are 5 copies of Lost Island and a copy of Steep Plateau in the staging area.

Cursed Temple (with 2 of 3 progress) is the active location.

Planning Phase

The Last Elven Host uses Dwarven Tomb to get Test of Will back. The Three Hunters plays Shield on Elrond. I exhaust Vilya and Elrond to play Miruvor for free which I attach to Gimli. I use UC to ready Elrond.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Last Elven Host commits Gildor, Galdor, Arwen and Elrond and The Three Hunters commits Aragorn, Rumi and Gimli (I then discard Miruvor to give Gimli +1 willpower and ready him) for a total of 18 willpower.

I reveal Aimless Wandering which I cancel straight away (which thank goodness I got Test of Will back as this would have removed 5 willpower) and then Lingering Malevolence. The Last Elven Host discards Haldir from the bottom of its deck due to its effect.

A total of 11 threat against 18 willpower results in me clearing Cursed Temple with ease and it is added to the victory display.

Travel

I travel to another Lost Island, hope for Shrine of Morgoth… and reveal..

Flooded Ruins! Hopefully more luck next turn! I may even need to travel to the Steep Plateau so that I can narrow down my choices.

Encounter

No enemies in staging.

Combat

Gimli defends against the Throng of Unfaithful and takes no damage (no shadow effect). Once again I leave the harmless Throng alone and do not attack it.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Staging Area/Active Location

There are four copies of Lost Island and a copy of Steep Plateau in the staging area.

Flooded Ruins (with 0 of 5 progress) is the active location.

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters plays Gandalf for 5 resources leaving 1 resource on Legolas for Hands Upon the Bow. I lower threat by 5. The Last Elven Host plays Caregiver with two lore resources from Galdor. I return Elven Light to hand from the discard pile with a spirit resource to draw a card: Galadrim Healer. I use Galdor’s other two lore resources to play the Healer. I discard Elven Light to put a resource on Elrond and once again pay a spirit resource to return it to hand to draw a card: Lindir! Fantastic! I immediately play Lindir for 3 spirit resources and draw two cards: LoV and Guardian of Rivendell.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Three Hunters commits Gandalf, Rumil, Calphon and Aragorn and The Last Elven Host commits Healer, both Caregivers, Gildor, Galdor, Arwen, Elrond and Northern Tracker for a total of 24 willpower. Now that I am at Stage 2 and it really pays off to place progress on Uncharted Locations I will start triggering Northern Tracker. This should pay off big time later! I place one progress on each location in staging. Not only will this help me clear Steep Plateau faster which still triggers even when explored in the staging area but might even allow me to look at the facedown sides of uncharted locations if the game goes that long.

I reveal Ruins of Ages Past which I can’t cancel which is more or less worst case scenario as it is hard enough to find Shrine of Morgoth already and I really don’t need extra copies of Lost Island to choose from. I then reveal a copy of Drowned Dead. A total of 16 threat (including Flooded Ruins effect) so I place 8 progress which adds Flooded Ruins to my victory display.

Travel

Time for another leap of faith… I travel yet again to a copy of Lost Island and reveal…

Cursed Temple…

Before the travel phase ends I use Hands Upon the Bow and Legolas attacks the Drowned Dead destroying it in one hit thanks to his Blade and Dagger. He places two progress on Cursed Temple.

Encounter

There are no enemies in staging.

Combat

Elrond defends against the Throngs of Unfaithful and Burning Brand cancels and effect that would have discarded a card from the bottom of The Three Hunters deck and buffed the Throngs attack. I leave the Throngs alone and do not counter attack.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 10: Stage 2B (- of – progress)

The Three Hunters draws Steward of Gondor (better late than never!) and The Last Elven Host draws Silver Harp.

Staging Area/Active Location

There are four copies of Lost Island and a copy of Steep Plateau in the staging area (each with 1 progress).

Cursed Temple (with 2 of 3 progress) is the active location.

Planning Phase

The Last Elven Host plays Guardian of Rivendell for all 3 resources and discards LoV and Elven Light as part of the cost. The Three Hunters does nothing for now.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor and Gildor and The Three Hunters commits Aragorn, Rumil and Guardian of Arnor for a total of 16 willpower. I trigger Northern Trackers ability again and place another progress token on each location in staging.

I reveal Soulless Cadaver and Curse of the Downfallen. Curse destroys the Galadhrim Healer and does 1 damage to each Caregiver which reduces total willpower to 15.

There is a total of 12 threat so I place 3 progress only 1 of which was needed to clear Cursed Temple.

Travel

Alright… Travel time! Hoping to wrap this up next turn I travel to yet another Lost Island hoping for the best and… Drowned Graves! Potentially the nastiest uncharted location you can see! I discard the top 4 cards of the encounter deck but only one enemy is discarded this way and added to the staging area. Drowned Dead is added to staging.

Encounter

The Last Elven Host engages Soulless Cadaver and places Silver Harp (in my hand) on the bottom of its deck. The Three Hunters engages Drowned Dead.

Combat

Elrond defends against the Soulless Cadaver and takes no damage then readies with UC. Gimli defends the Throngs of Unfaithful and then discards Drowned Dead’s shadow card and readies with Armored Destrier. He defends against both enemies and takes no damage from either.

Elrond, Guardian of Rivendell and Fornost Bowman destroy the Soulless Cadaver. Legolas destroys Drowned Dead single handed and clears Drowned Graves while he is at it! The annoying but harmless Throngs continue to be left alone.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 11: Stage 2B (- of – progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Sterner than Steel and The Last Elven Host draws Elven Light.

The Three Hunters
36 threat (First Player)
Hand: Steward, Halbarad and x2 Sterner Than Steel.

— Aragorn: 2 resources, 0 damage
— Gimli: 2 resources, 0 damage. Armored Destrier, Dunedain Warning and Shield attached
— Legolas: 2 resources, 0 damage. Rivendell Blade and Dagger of Westernesse attached

Allies:

-Boromir

-Rumil

-Fornost

-Guardian of Arnor

-Calphon

Engaged With:

-Throngs of Unfaithful

Discard Pile:
Captain’s Wisdom, Sneak Attack, Foe Hammer, Sneak Attack, Galadriel, Sneak Attack, Feint, Foe Hammer, Fornost Bowman, Feint, Hands Upon the Bow and Gandalf.

The Last Elven Host
38 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Elven Light

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. LoV, Vilya, Burning Brand, Elven Mail, Cloak of Lorien, Gondorian Shield and UC attached.
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage. Silver Harp
— Galdor: 1 resource, 0 damage. Cloak of Lorien

Allies:

-Northern Tracker

-Gildor

-Guardian of Rivendell

-Imladris Caregiver x2

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Elven Light, Northern Tracker, Miruvor, Elronds Counsel, Test of Will and Elronds Counsel, Guardian of Rivendell, Galadrim Healer, Handmaiden, Stargazer, Dwarven Tomb, Greeting, Dwarven Tomb, Test of Will, Haldir, LoV and Elven Light.

Staging Area/Active Location

There are x3 copies of Lost Island and Steep Plateau in the staging area (2 resources on each).

There is no active location.

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters plays Steward of Gondor on Gimli and he gets another point of defense thanks to Shield now giving him +2 instead of +1. I exhaust it to put Gimli back on 2 resources. Now its time for some card draw and heal shenanigans with Caregiver! The Last Host discards Elven Host to put a resource on Elrond with Arwen’s ability. I return two copies of Elven Light to hand with Arwen’s resources to draw: another copy of Elven Light and Vilya. I discard them both to heal 1 damage off each Caregiver (with their ability). I return a final copy of Elven Light to hand to draw Stargazer. Psh this would have been a great card earlier on so that Vilya wasn’t used blindly.

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Three Hunters commits Rumil and Aragorn and The Last Elven Host commits Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, Gildor, Northern Tracker and both Caregivers. A total of 14 Willpower.

Northern Tracker places the third and final point of progress on Steep Plateau! I look at the facedown side of a Lost Island thanks to Steep Plateau’s ability. I reveal… Forbidden Coast!

After seeing one of the three remaining Lost Islands facedown side I now have a 50% chance of arriving at the Shrine this turn! I reveal Servant of the Deceiver and…

Aimless Wandering! This is incredible. After removing Gildor from the quest from its initial effect I give it the optional Doomed 2 to look at the facedown side of another Lost Island and reveal… The Shrine of Morgoth!

Shrine-to-Morgoth.jpg
Finally I catch sight of my target destination!

11 Willpower against 9 threat allows me to quest sucessfully but I do not place any progress.

Travel

I immediately travel to the copy of Lost Island that I know for a fact is the Shrine. I arrive and no allies in play are affected by the Shrines first ability (all ready allies are 3 cost or higher). As for the second effect of both decks searching the encounter deck and discard for an enemy and putting it into play with them? I decide to challenge the decks a little and ramp things up for the end and find two Servant’s of the Deceiver and put one into play engaed with each deck. The Three Hunters discards Elven Mail to its engaged Servants effect and it gets +2 attack until the end of the turn. The Last Elven Host discards UC to its engaged Servants effect and it also gets +2 attack until the end of the turn.

Encounter

The Three Hunters optionally engages the Servant in the staging area. It discards Gandalf and remains at 3 attack.

Combat

Gimli defends against the weaker Servant with 3 attack and pays one resource to ready Aragorn. I use Armored Destrier to ready Gimli and discard the shadow card from the Servant with 5 attack. Gimli defends against both and takes no damage (the first Servant has a shadow that discards the bottom card of your deck and has a chance to give the enemy another attack, I cancel this with Sterner than Steel). Boromir defends against the Throngs of Unfaithful, takes 1 damage (no shadow effect) and readies from his ability.

Elrond defends against the final Servant and comes out unscathed as well thanks to Burning Brand cancelling a shadow that discards the bottom card of your deck and has a chance to buff the enemys attack. He readies with UC.

Legolas destroys one of the Servants single handed and places 2 progress on Shrine of Morgoth. Boromir and Aragorn together destroy another Servant. Fornost Bowman, Elrond and Guardian of Rivendell attack and do 2 damage to the final Servant leaving it on 1 hitpoint.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 12: Stage 2B (- of – progress)

Resource Phase

Neither deck draws a card during the resource phase due to the effect on Shrine of Morgoth.

The Three Hunters
39 threat (First Player)
Hand: Eldahir,  Sterner than Steel and Halbarad.

— Aragorn: 3 resource, 0 damage.
— Gimli: 4 resource, 0 damage. Armored Destrier, Dunedain Warning and Shield attached
— Legolas: 3 resource, 0 damage. Rivendell Blade and Dagger of Westernesse attached.

Allies:

-Boromir (1 damage)

-Rumil

-Guardian of Arnor

-Fornost Bowman

Engaged With:

-Throngs of Unfaithful

Discard Pile:
Captain’s Wisdom, Sneak Attack, Foe Hammer, Sneak Attack, Galadriel, Sneak Attack, Feint, Foe Hammer, Fornost Bowman, Feint, Hands Upon the Bow, Gandalf, Elven Mail, Gandalf and Sterner than Steel

The Last Elven Host
41 threat (First Player)
Hand: x3 Elven Light and Stargazer

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. LoV, Vilya, Burning Brand, Elven Mail, Cloak of Lorien, Gondorian Shield and UC attached.
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage. Silver Harp
— Galdor: 2 resources, 0 damage. Cloak of Lorien

Allies:

-Calphon

-Caregiver x2

-Gildor

-Northern Tracker

-Guardian of Rivendell

Engaged With:

-Servant of the Deceiver (2 damage)

Discard Pile:
Elven Light, Northern Tracker, Miruvor, Elronds Counsel, Test of Will and Elronds Counsel, Guardian of Rivendell, Galadrim Healer, Handmaiden, Stargazer, Dwarven Tomb, Greeting, Dwarven Tomb, Test of Will, Haldir, LoV, UC and Vilya.

Staging Area/Active Location

There are two copies of Lost Island in staging (with 3 progress on each).

The active location is Shrine of Morgoth (with 2 of 8 progress).

Planning Phase

So technically I think I could still actually play Stargazer and look at (which technically isn’t searching your deck but is “looking” at the top five cards of your deck) the top five cards, play one with Vilya (not drawing or searching), ready Elrond and still commit him to the quest but I’m not 100% sure if this is legal and also really shouldn’t need any extra boosts to willpower so long as I go more or less all out this turn. The goal is definitely to clear the Shrine right away and achieve victory. With just a few enemies engaged and few locations left in staging it would not be a disaster if I had to play a few more turns out but this is extremely unlikely as I should easily be able to place 6 progress this turn to clear the Shrine of Morgoth. Instead The Last Elven Host plays nothing at all. The Three Hunters plays Halbarad for 3 leadership resources (1 less from being engaged with one enemy).

Staging and Quest Resolution

The Last Elven Host commits everyone (Elrond, Arwen, Galdor, Gildor, NT, Caregiver x2, Calphon and Guardian of Rivendell) and The Three Hunters commits Aragorn, Boromir, Fornost Bowman, Rumil and Guardian of Arnor leaving only Gimli and Legolas as emergency combat heroes should I fail to quest to victory (Elrond as well thanks to LoV/UC). A total of 23 willpower! Against the measly 4 threat in the staging area at the moment it would take at least 14 additional threat to stop me from winning this turn. I’m honestly not sure if that is even possible at this point. I reveal Mysterious Fog and choose to give each copy of Lost Island +1 threat and then reveal Servant of the Deceiver. Total threat is only 9 so I place 14 progress on Shrine of Morgoth which is more than enough to achieve victory at last!

Conclusion

This game was a bit of a slog and took way more rounds to achieve victory than the last two turn by turn reports. This is solely because of my search for the Shrine of Morgoth on stage 2. This is honestly probably the longest game I have had of this quest and I usually find the Shrine way faster and have much more luck.

Regardless of the length of the game the decks managed this quest with ease. The Dunland Trap and potentially even Trouble in Tharbad both provided far more of a challenge than this one. Really great mechanics but an absolute push over of a quest for strong decks.

The enemies in this quest are very tame and can be few and far between at times. I had several rounds with little to no combat which was somewhat boring to be completely honest. Servant of the Deceiver is definitely the nastiest foe in the quest so I specifically put two into play at the end from the effect on the Shrine to challenge my decks. Although this was fun to do it provided very little challenge and I was easily able to stand against three of them at once (a third was already in play). The cool location mechanics and theme of the quest sort of offset how easy combat is in this quest.

Steep Plateau is key to beating this quest and an amazing location that really helps you out. I have to admit I really love quests that have an encounter card or two that actually help the players.

The decks performed really well during this game and Elrond became an absolute demon questing, using Vilya and defending with Burning Brand all in the same turn. Not much to say on this one as it was pretty straight forward and a very fun but easy game.
