Turn by Turn Report – Conflict at the Carrock

Time for another turn by turn report! I’m playing a somewhat easy quest more just for fun than for a challenge. It has been a while since I have played Conflict at the Carrock so I decided to give it a go and record my game while doing so. This quest was once quite difficult and a real test for most decks early on in the games history, the trolls bosses at the end are fairly challenging foes and if you arrive at the second quest stage too early and face the trolls before you are well prepared you risk becoming their next meal!

The main strategy I utilize for this quest which is a bit of a no brainer and one the vast majority of players I’m sure also employ is to spend as long as possible on Stage 1 building up attachments and allies in preparation for the trolls. Once I do eventually arrive at Stage 2 I focus on killing Louis first, then Morris and Stuart and finally Rupert last. If Louis is not killed quickly he can easily make players/decks threat out and lose the quest entirely. Morris and Stuart simply buff all Trolls attack or defense and Rupert shuffles copies of Sacked in the discard pile back into the encounter deck. Although the Sacked treacheries can be pretty devastating so long as you bring condition removal to the table or have the means to quickly defeat the trolls on Stage 2 they are not too much of a concern. Due to this and also because defeating Stuart or Morris allows you to deal with the remaining trolls more easily is why Rupert is always taken out last. Other than this there isn’t much more to say about this quest so it is time to dive in and get things started!

Louis.jpg
I absolutely HATE Louis and the stupid ability he gives to all Trolls. I pretty much always focus on defeating him first so that I can defeat the others at a more leisurely manner without fear of threating out.

Setup and Opening Hands

Cards that would be nice to see in my opening hands for this quest would be Power of Orthanc (for the awful Sacked treachery card), Send for Aid (so I can fetch some powerful allies and slow down progress on the main quest), some combat attachments to prepare for combat with the trolls later on and some overall handy events like Feint or Test of Will that will either help me stall and build up forces on Stage 1 or will help keep things under control during Stage 2 while I fend off the Trolls.

I draw Steward of Gondor, x2 Gondorian Shield, Naith Guide, Dunedain Warning and Faramir for the Three Hunters starting hand and decide to keep it. The Shields and copy of Warning are great in preparation for later on and Steward is always great to see in an opening hand. Faramir should help with questing later on allowing me to keep more characters back for combat against the trolls. I draw Light of Valinor, Orophin, Power of Orthanc, Imladris Caregiver, Burning Brand and Vilya for The Last Elven Host’s starting hand and keep this as well. Power of Orthanc is great for getting rid of a copy/copies of Sacked and Caregiver provides healing which may be very important later on. Vilya and LoV on Elrond first turn is a great opening play and will hopefully set this deck up to be able to play many cards for free over the course of this game. It would have been nice to see Send for Aid or a weapon attachment as well but these are both very decent hands so I hope to instead draw into the various other cards I will need for combat against the Trolls.

For quest setup I add the Carrock to the staging area, remove 4 copies of Sacked and the 4 unique troll enemies from the encounter deck and put them aside then shuffle 2 copies of Sacked back into the encounter deck. I flip Stage 1A to Stage 1B ready to start the game!

Round 1: Stage 1B (0 of 7 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Guardian of Arnor and The Last Elven Host draws Daeron’s Runes. Daeron’s Runes is a nice card to see this early to get some extra card draw and options early game. Guardian of Arnor may be helpful with defense against enemies I face along the way as well as the trolls I will eventually need to face.

The Three Hunters
32 threat (First Player)
Hand: Steward of Gondor, Gondorian Shield x2, Naith Guide, Dunedain Warning and Faramir.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage

The Last Elven Host
31 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Light of Valinor, Orophin, Power of Orthanc, Imladris Caregiver, Burning Brand and Vilya.

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Galadriel: 1 resource, 0 damage

Staging Area/Active Location

The Carrock is in the staging area. There is no active location

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters plays both copies of Gondorian Shield, one on Elrond and the other on Gimli. Next turn I can play Steward and either Naith Guide or Warning.

The Last Elven Host plays Daeron’s Runes to begin with and draws Elrond’s Counsel and Lindir. I discard Elrond’s Counsel and then play Vilya and LoV on Elrond.

Staging and Quest Resolution

I commit only Arwen and Elrond for a total of 6 willpower. I reveal The East Bight and then Roasted Slowly which thankfully does nothing. There is a total of 3 threat in staging so I place 3 progress on Stage 1B. I exhaust Vilya and Elrond to play a copy of Imladris Caregiver for free and then exhaust Galadriel to lower the threat of The Three Hunters by 1 and draw Armored Destrier. This will be a critical card later on and will help Gimli defend against multiple troll attacks each turn as well as discard shadow cards while doing so.

Travel

I am forced to travel to The East Bight due to its forced effect. This is actually great as it is a really good buffer for placing progress on the main quest allowing me to quest more safely and without fear of advancing to Stage 2 too early.

Encounter

There are no enemies in play.

Combat

Again no enemies in play so nothing happens.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 2: Stage 1B (3 of 7 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Dunedain Warning and The Last Elven Host draws Silver Harp.
The two copies of Warning on Gimli alongside Shield will make him into a wall of defense which is perfect for combat against powerful troll enemies with high attack. Silver Harp will be great to provide free healing from Caregivers or free resources via Arwen.

The Three Hunters
32 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Armored Destrier, Steward of Gondor, Guardian of Arnor, x2 Dunedain Warning, Naith Guide and Faramir.

— Aragorn: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Gimli: 2 resources, 0 damage. Gondorian Shield attached.
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Empty

The Last Elven Host
32 threat (First Player)
Hand: Orophin, Silver Harp, Caregiver, Lindir, Power of Orthanc and Burning Brand.

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. LoV, Vilya and Gondorian Shield attached
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage
— Galadriel: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Imladris Caregiver

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Daeron’s Runes and Elrond’s Counsel.

Staging Area/Active Location

The Carrock is in the staging area.
The East Bight with 0 of 6 progress is the active location.

Planning Phase

The Last Elven Host plays Silver Harp for two spirit resources on Arwen and I use it to discard nothing with Arwen’s ability to place a resource on Elrond. I then use Elrond’s two resources to play another Caregiver.

The Three Hunters plays Steward of Gondor on Gimli and I immediately exhaust it to also play Armored Destrier on Gimli as well.

Staging and Quest Resolution

Alright this time I quest with Elrond, Arwen and the Caregiver I just played (without exhausting it) for a total of 7 willpower.

I reveal a Hill Troll! and then Grimbeorn so there is a total of 3 threat in staging and I place 4 progress on The East Bight. Even though I have been lucky enough to reveal Grimbeorn nice and early I do not plan on using him at all and will focus on beating the quest with my player cards alone and without his help.

Travel

Cannot travel as there is an active location and nowhere I can travel to anyway.

Encounter

The Three Hunters optionally engages the Hill Troll.

Combat

Gimli is declared as the defender against the Hill Troll and takes 2 damage (roasted slowly is the shadow card healing no damage from the Troll) then readies with Armored Destrier.
I counter attack with Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn to place 6 damage on the Hill Troll and hope to destroy it next turn. I exhaust Vilya and Elrond to play Galadrim Healer for free which heals 2 damage off Gimli (perfect timing!). I exhaust Galadriel to put the threat of The Three Hunters down by a point again and to draw Steward of Gondor which is useless but at least I will draw something else during the resource phase next turn!

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Hill-Troll.jpg
An early game Hill Troll kicks things into the next gear and makes the game interesting. I need to kill this foe as quickly as possible so that I am not still facing him when I advance to Stage 2.

Round 3: Stage 1B (3 of 7 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Foe Hammer and The Last Elven Host draws Galadriel’s Handmaiden. Foe Hammer is useless right now with no weapon attachments in play or in hand but when I get one out it will provide some much needed card draw. Things are still going slow and although I am building up questing power and support allies quickly I am not building up my combat power by much or at least only the defensive side of things and not the offensive side. I hope to get some strong offensive allies and weapon attachments out as soon as I can.

The Three Hunters
32 threat (First Player)
Hand: Foe Hammer, x2 Dunedain Warning, Guardian of Arnor, Steward of Gondor, Naith Guide and Faramir

— Aragorn: 2 resources, 0 damage
— Gimli: 3 resources, 0 damage. Armored Destrier, Steward and Shield attached.
— Legolas: 2 resources, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-Hill Troll (6 damage)

Discard Pile:
Empty

The Last Elven Host
33 threat (First Player)
Hand: Galadriel’s Handmaiden, Burning Brand, Orophin, Lindir and Power of Orthanc.

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. LoV, Vilya and Shield attached.
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached.
— Galadriel: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Imladris Caregiver x2

-Galadrim Healer

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Daeron’s Runes and Elrond’s Counsel.

Staging Area/Active Location

The Carrock and Grimbeorn are in the staging area. The East Bight with 4 progress is the active location.

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters plays both copies of Dunedain Warning on Gimli to deal with the Hill Troll’s second attack. The Last Elven Host plays Handmaiden reducing its threat by 1 and I then use Silver Harp to discard nothing and place another resource on Elrond to play Burning Brand for 2 and attach it to Elrond. This may be very handy later against the Trolls.

Staging and Quest Resolution

I commit Arwen and Elrond for a total of 6 willpower and reveal Despair and Goblin Sniper. A total of 4 threat results in two progress which clears The East Bight.

Travel

No travel options.

Encounter

The Three Hunters optionally engages the Goblin Sniper as there are no other enemies in the staging area.

Combat

I decide to use Gimli’s inherent ability and Armored Destrier to my advantage so I can destroy both enemies in play this turn. I defend the Sniper with Aragorn who takes no damage as the shadow card is Sacked, thank goodness this was not the shadow card the Hill Troll received!! Gimli defends against the Hill Troll, pays 1 resource to ready Aragorn and readies with Armored Destrier. He takes no damage as there is no shadow effect. Aragorn attacks and destroys the Goblin Sniper and Legolas and Gimli attack with 5 and destroy the Hill Troll putting it in the victory display! I exhaust Galadriel to lower the threat of The Three Hunters by 1 and draw Sneak Attack. Another more or less useless card for the time being but so long as I can draw Gandalf before I take on the trolls I will be able to use him twice to help me out with them.

heavy-stroke.jpg
Gimli helps Legolas finish off the wounded Hill Troll

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 4: Stage 1B (0 of 7 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Dagger of Westernesse and The Last Elven Host draws Test of Will. Dagger is an amazing card to draw as now I can use Foe Hammer.

The Three Hunters
32 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Faramir, Naith Guide, Guardian of Arnor, Steward of Gondor, Foe Hammer, Sneak Attack and Dagger of Westernesse.

— Aragorn: 3 resources, 0 damage
— Gimli: 3 resources, 0 damage. Armored Destrier, Steward, Shield and x2 Warning attached
— Legolas: 3 resources, 0 damage

Allies:

-none

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Empty

The Last Elven Host
33 threat (First Player)
Hand: Test of Will, Orophin, Lindir and Power of Orthanc

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. LoV, Shield, Vilya and Burning Brand attached
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached
— Galadriel: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Imladris Caregiver x2

-Galadrim Healer

-Galadriel’s Handmaiden

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Daeron’s Runes and Elrond’s Counsel.

Staging Area/Active Location

The Carrock is in the staging area. No active location.

Planning Phase

The Last Elven Host plays nothing and saves resources for Lindir, Orophin etc. I do exhaust Galadriel however to lower the threat of The Three Hunters by 1 and draw Unlikely Friendship as I really need to get more combat allies and attachments out. I use Unlikely Friendship to place a resource on Gimli and draw Azain Silverbeard which is perfect!

The Three Hunters plays Naith Guide for 2 leadership resources then Dagger of Westernesse and Azain for 4 tactics resources. Now things are looking a little better offensive wise for my battle with the Trolls.

Staging and Quest Resolution

I commit Elrond and Arwen (without exhausting either thanks to LoV and Naith Guide) for a total of 6 willpower. I reveal Marsh Adder and Banks of the Anduin for a total of 6 threat in the staging area. No progress is made.

Travel

I travel to Banks of the Anduin.

Encounter

The Three Hunters optionally engages Marsh Adder to take care of it quickly and efficiently.

Combat

Gimli defends Marsh Adder and takes no damage as there is no shadow effect. I raise The Three Hunters threat by 1. I attack the Marsh Adder with Aragorn, Legolas and Azain to destroy it and use Foe Hammer to draw Unlikely Friendship, Eldarhir and Sterner than Steel which are all fantastic cards to see for this quest and for what I am trying to achieve before advancing to Stage 2. I use Unlikely Friendship to place a resource on Gimli and draw Feint. Elrond and Vilya are exhausted to play a copy of Galadrim Healer for free.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

marsh-adder
What was once a fearsome foe in the Core Set days is now a joke that is easily defeated the same turn it appears.

Round 5: Stage 1B (0 of 7 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Naith Guide and The Last Elven Host draws Glorfindel who will be a great addition to my troll slaying team.

The Three Hunters
33 threat (First Player)
Hand: Naith Guide, Eldarhir, Faramir, Guardian of Arnor, Sterner than Steel, Feint, Sneak Attack and Steward of Gondor.

— Aragorn: 3 resources, 0 damage
— Gimli: 6 resources, 0 damage. AD, Shield, Steward, x2 Warning attached
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage. Dagger of Westernesse attached.

Allies:

-Naith Guide

-Azain Silverbeard

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Unlikely Friendship x2 and Foe Hammer

The Last Elven Host
34 threat (SecondPlayer)
Hand: Glorfindel, Lindir, Orophin, Test of Will and Power of Orthanc.

— Elrond: 2 resources, 0 damage. LoV, Vilya, Shield and Brand attached.
— Arwen: 2 resources, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached.
— Galadriel: 2 resources, 0 damage

Allies:

-Imladris Caregiver x2

-Galadrim Healer x2

-Galadrial’s Handmaiden

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Daeron’s Runes and Elrond’s Counsel.

Staging Area/Active Location

The Carrock and Grimbeorn are in the staging area. The active location is Banks of the Anduin with no progress on it.

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters plays Naith Guide and Eldarhir with all 6 of Gimli’s resources. The Last Elven Host uses Silver Harp and Arwen to place a resource on Arwen to play Glorfindel. I exhaust Galadriel to reduce the Three Hunters threat by 1 and draw another copy of Feint.
Two copies of Feint will be extremely useful in minimizing the amount of attacks I need to defend during the first round of combat with the trolls at the end.

Staging and Quest Resolution

I commit Elrond, Glorfindel and Arwen and exhaust no one to quest for a total of 9 willpower. I reveal Despair which does nothing as there is no progress on the active quest and Wolf Rider which surges into a copy of Wargs. A total of 5 threat means I place 4 progress which clears Banks of the Anduin placing it back on top of the encounter deck and puts a single point of progress on Stage 1B.

Travel

Nowhere to travel.

Encounter

The Three Hunters optionally engages Wargs and then Wolf Rider engages The Three Hunters as well.

Combat

Gimli defends against the Wargs first off who I know will return to the staging area as they are going to receive Banks of the Anduin as their shadow card which has no shadow effect. Gimli takes no damage, readies and discards the shadow card dealt to Wolf Rider thanks to Armored Destrier. He then defends against Wolf Rider as well and takes no damage once again. Aragorn attacks and kills the Wolf Rider which allows me to engage Wargs once more and destroy them with Legolas.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 6: Stage 1B (1 of 7 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Hour of Wrath which will potentially be a key card to taking the trolls down quickly and The Last Elven Host draws Gildor Inglorion who could make a good backup defender.

The Three Hunters
33 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Hour of Wrath, Feint x2, Sterner Than Steel, Guardian of Arnor, Faramir, Sneak Attack and Steward of Gondor.

— Aragorn: 4 resources, 0 damage
— Gimli: 3 resources, 0 damage. AD, Shield, Steward and x2 Warning attached.
— Legolas: 2 resources, 0 damage. Dagger attached.

Allies:

-Naith Guide x2

-Azain Silverbeard

-Eldarhir

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Unlikely Friendship x2 and Foe Hammer.

The Last Elven Host
35 threat (First Player)
Hand: Gildor, Test of Will, Lindir, Orophin and Power of Orthanc.

— Elrond: 3 resources, 0 damage. Vilya, LoV, Brand and Shield attached.
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached.
— Galadriel: 1 resource, 0 damage

Allies:

-Imladris Caregiver x2

-Galadrim Healer x2

-Galadriel’s Handmaiden

-Glorfindel

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Daeron’s Runes and Elrond’s Counsel.

Staging Area/Active Location

The Carrock and Grimbeorn are in the staging area. No active location.

Planning Phase

The Last Elven Host plays Orophin with Elrond’s 3 resources. I then exhaust Galadriel to lower the threat of The Three Hunters by 1 and draw Send for Aid!! This is a fantastic card to see and may be the turning point in this game. After I clear this side quest I will pretty much be ready to advance to Stage 2 prepared to take on the Trolls!

The Three Hunters plays Send for Aid and places it in the staging area ready to clear it this turn!

Staging and Quest Resolution

I change things up and quest hard and commit Orophin, Glorfindel, x2 Healer, x2 Caregiver, Handmaiden, Arwen and Elrond for a total of 17 willpower. I reveal Gladden Fields and River Langflood for a total of 7 threat in staging. I place 10 progress on Send for Aid (which was obviously chosen as the current quest) and clear it! It allows me to put Boromir and Stargazer into play for free. I exhaust Stargazer to reveal in order from the top of my deck, top to bottom: Galdor, Elven Light, Elven Light, Nenya and Power of Orthanc. I put them back in the following order top to bottom: Galdor, Nenya, Light, Power of Orthanc and Light. I exhaust Vilya and Elrond to play Galdor for free.

Travel

I travel to the River Langford to remove its threat from staging considering it may soon have a very high boosted threat as I plan to advance to Stage 2 next turn if able.

Encounter

There are no enemies in play.

Combat

Again no enemies in play.

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

Round 7: Stage 1B (1 of 7 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Rivendell Blade (perfect to buff Legolas further especially when I use Hour of Wrath) and The Last Elven Host draws Nenya.

The Three Hunters
33 threat (First Player)
Hand: Rivendell Blade, Guardian Of Arnor, Hour of Wrath, Feint x2, Sterner than Steel, Faramir, Sneak Attack and Steward of Gondor.

— Aragorn: 5 resources, 0 damage.
— Gimli: 5 resources, 0 damage. AD, Shield, Steward and x2 Warning attached.
— Legolas: 3 resources, 0 damage. Dagger attached.

Allies:

-Naith Guide x2

-Boromir

-Eldarhir

-Azain Silverbeard

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Unlikely Friendship x2 and Foe Hammer.

The Last Elven Host
36 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Nenya, Lindir, Test of Will, Power of Orthanc and Gildor

— Elrond: 1 resource, 0 damage. Shield, Vilya, LoV and Brand attached.
— Arwen: 2 resources, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached.
— Galadriel: 2 resources, 0 damage

Allies:

-Imladris Caregiver x2

-Galadrim Healer x2

-Galadriel’s Handmaiden

-Glorfindel

-Galdor of the Havens

-Orophin

-Stargazer

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Daeron’s Runes and Elrond’s Counsel.

Staging Area/Active Location

The Carrock, Grimbeorn and Gladden Fields are in the staging area. River Langford is the active location with 0 progress.

Planning Phase

The Three Hunters plays Rivendell Blade on Legolas and Guardian of Arnor. The Last Elven Host plays Lindir and Nenya on Galadriel. I exhaust Stargazer to reveal top to bottom: Elven Light, Power of Orthanc, Elven Light, Miruvor and UC. I put them back in the following order top to bottom: UC, Miruvor, Elven Light, Power, Elven Light.
I exhaust Elrond and Vilya to play UC on Elrond and immediately exhaust it to ready Elrond.

Alright time to advance to Stage 2 and smash some Troll face in!

Staging and Quest Resolution

Time for a big questing push but I am also going to need to keep as many characters back for combat as possible. I commit Elrond (who I boost with Galadriel up to 7 willpower), Arwen, Lindir, x2 Caregiver, x2 Healer, Handmaiden and Glorfindel for a total of 21 willpower. I reveal two copies of Misty Mountain Goblins during staging which is a total of 9 threat in staging allowing me to clear River Langford and Stage 1B immediately making The Carrock the active location and advancing to Stage 2A! I put all four unique troll enemies that were put aside during setup into the staging area.

Travel

I cannot travel with The Carrock as the active location.

Encounter

One thing that I have not planned for was the combat deck having a lower threat level than the engagement cost of the Trolls and the majority of trolls engaging The Last Elven host instead. The two Misty Mountain Goblins are also not something I expected or wanted to see on the same turn I take on the trolls but even though they are two extra enemies at least they are fairly weak ones. To counter this as much as possible I decide to optionally engage Louis with The Three Hunters and plan to also use Aragorn’s ability to my advantage.
I then let the normal engagement phase run out:
A Misty Mountain Goblin engages The Three Hunters.
Rupert engages The Last Elven Host.
The other Misty Mountain Goblin engages The Three Hunters.
Morris and then finally Stuart engage The Last Elven Host.
Time for Combat!

Combat

I immediately use both copies of Feint to stop Stuart and Morris from attacking this phase. I then play Hour of Wrath on Legolas allowing him to attack without exhausting for the rest of this phase. Gimli defends against Louis with no shadow effect, he readies and discards a shadow card from a Misty Mountain Goblin with Armored Destrier. Guardian of Arnor defends against the Misty Mountain Goblin with no shadow card. Boromir defends against the other Misty Mountain Goblin and takes 1 damage readying him. Elrond defends the final attack from Rupert taking 2 damage in the process. I shuffle all copies of Sacked back into the encounter deck and both player decks raise threat by 3 each due a single troll attacking each deck (Louis’s effect).

Time for one hell of an epic counter attack!
Legolas attacks and destroys both Misty Mountain Goblins on his own!
Legolas, Aragorn, Azain Silverbeard and a Naith Guide attack and destroy Louis and Aragorn’s effect allows The Three Hunters to engage Stuart.
Legolas, Boromir, Gimli and Eldarhir attack and destroy Stuart!
I then discard Gildor from hand to ready Glorfindel.
Legolas, Orophin, Galdor and Glorfindel attack and destroy Morris!
Finally Legolas on his own attacks Rupert and deals 3 damage to him.
Just killed 3 of the 4 trolls in one fell swoop!

Refresh

All characters are unexhausted. Each deck raises threat by 1. No player actions are taken.

legolas-alt-art.jpg
Legolas + Weapon attachments + Hour of Wrath = Many dead enemies!

Round 8: Stage 2B (0 of 1 progress)

Resource Phase

The Three Hunters draws Unlikely Friendship and The Last Elven Host draws Miruvor. Both are useful but I am so close to victory as this point that I probably won’t really need either of them.

The Three Hunters
37 threat (Second Player)
Hand: Faramir, Sterner than Steel, Sneak Attack, Steward of Gondor and Unlikely Friendship.

— Aragorn: 2 resources, 0 damage
— Gimli: 5 resources, 0 damage. Steward, Shield, AD and x2 Warning attached.
— Legolas: 1 resource, 0 damage. Dagger and Blade attached.

Allies:

-Naith Guide x2

-Guardian of Arnor

-Eldarhir

-Azain Silverbeard

-Boromir

Engaged With:

-nothing

Discard Pile:
Unlikely Friendship x2, Foe Hammer, Feint x2 and Hour of Wrath.

The Last Elven Host
37 threat (First Player)
Hand: Test of Will, Power of Orthanc and Miruvor

— Elrond: 2 resources, 2 damage. UC, Shield, Brand, LoV and Vilya attached
— Arwen: 1 resource, 0 damage. Silver Harp attached.
— Galadriel: 1 resource, 0 damage. Nenya attached.

Allies:

-Imladris Caregiver x2

-Galadrim Healer x2

-Galadriel’s Handmaiden

-Galdor of the Havens

-Orophin

-Stargazer

-Gildor Inglorion

-Lindir

Engaged With:

-Rupert (3 damage)

Discard Pile:
Daeron’s Runes, Gildor Inglorion and Elrond’s Counsel.

Staging Area/Active Location

Gladden Fields and Grimbeorn are in the staging area and The Carrock is the active location.

Planning Phase

The Last Elven Host plays Miruvor on Gimli. I then exhaust Stargazer to look at the top 5 cards of my deck and reveal top to bottom: Elven Light, Power of Orthanc, Elven Light, Nenya and UC. I place them back in the following order top to bottom: UC, Elven Light, Nenya, Elven Light and Power of Orthanc. I exhaust Vilya and Elrond to play UC on Legolas. I then ready Elrond with his copy of UC and use Silver Harp to heal 2 damage from him. The Three Hunters plays Unlikely Friendship and places a resource on Gimli and draws another copy of Sterner than Steel. I also play Faramir for 4 leadership resources.

Staging and Quest Resolution

I use Faramir to boost The Last Elven Host and quest with Glorfindel, Elrond (who I boost with Galadriel), Arwen, x2 Healer, x2 Caregiver, Handmaiden, Lindir and x2 Naith Guide for a total of 33 willpower. I reveal Sacked! which I attach to Arwen and Muck Adder making the total threat in staging 4. I place a whopping 29 progress 6 of which clears The Carrock and the other 23 is placed on Stage 2B.

Travel

No need to travel this close to victory.

Encounter

The Three Hunters optionally engages Muck Adder.

Combat

Gimli defends against Rupert, takes no damage and readies with AD. I shuffle each copy of Sacked back into the encounter deck. Gimli then defends against the Muck Adder as well taking no damage once again and readying with Miruvor (I also place a resource on him). Legolas and Aragorn destroy the Muck Adder, Legolas readies with UC and Aragorn allows me to engage Rupert with The Three Hunters. Legolas, Azain, Boromir, Eldahir, Orophin and Gimli attack and destroy Rupert. With no trolls in play and 23 progress on Stage 2B I immediately achieve victory!

Rupert.jpg
Last to fall but utterly destroyed with an extra 9 points of unnecessary damage dealt to him!

CONCLUSION

This was a walk in the park for my decks but was a cool exercise in seeing just how strong the current player card pool is against such an early quest that was originally quite difficult. Even with how easy this game was it was still quite fun and it was neat setting up both decks for the showdown with the trolls and trying to gage exactly how much I needed in play to dominate them thoroughly. Turns out I probably could have advanced a turn or two earlier and still would have done just fine as I completely shut the trolls down when I did decide to advance without any real resistance from them. Hour of Wrath was key to Legolas raining down utter destruction on the second last turn and killing three troll enemies in one combat phase. Even without Hour of Wrath though I would have beaten the trolls handily within a few more turns. I still had decent threat levels with both decks and was at no risk of losing the game due to combat thanks to the powerful board states I had set up with each deck. I also did not draw a single copy of Gandalf all game, utilize Grimbeorn at all, lose a single character to enemy attacks or have any damage left on characters by the end except for a single point of damage on Boromir which I took on purpose to ready him.

This game really highlighted just how diverse, difficult and nuanced the quests we get nowadays are compared to early quests like this one. Even the easier of the new quests these days still have so many more mechanics, triggers and interesting shadow effects than these early quests do. Newer quests also contain so many more encounter cards and effects that combo together or work towards a shared purpose. This game has truly come a long way since its humble beginnings and due to the simplicity of this quest it was certainly my player decks rather than the encounter deck that were the main source of fun and attention as well as the main focus of this game.

I hope you enjoyed the read and seeing my decks in action against a much easier quest.
I should hopefully be receiving Sands of Harad early next week and plan to do Turn by Turn reports on a few of the quests it features.

Nice write-up. I love your turn by turn reports. I very much prefer them to online videos. Reading allows me to quickly browse back and forth or gives me the time to let certain turns ‘soak in’ and see where you’re coming from. Thanks a lot. Keep ’em coming !

    1. Thanks so much Arkhan! Very glad to hear you are enjoying the turn by turn reports! I’m going to do some for the new Sands of Harad quests soon but if you have any suggestions of quests you would like to see me do turn by turn reports of after that I’m all ears. Easier to medium difficulty quests are better so I don’t have to record several losses first.

Some TBT reports for Sands of Harad sounds very nice as I’ve also received my copy of that expansion last week. Curious about how your decks do against those quests. 🙂
